September 2009 Roundup
30th September 2009
September was one of the busiest months so far this year, with a wide variety of significant handsets being launched in time for Christmas.
Nokia kicked off the month with the shrunk-down Nokia N97 Mini, the glamorous Nokia X6 touchscreen multimedia phone and the low-cost Nokia X3 music phone. This was followed up by the Nokia Mural clamshell on AT&T in the US, and we also looked at the CDMA Nokia 7705 Twist with its radical form factor.
A busy month for Samsung with their "Corby" range (called "Genio" in the UK). The Samsung Corby S3650 (or Samsung Genio) is a fun midrange touchscreen phone aimed at social networkers, the Samsung Corby Pro B5310 (or Genio Pro) is a relatively high-end device with WiFi, 3.5G and a QWERTY keyboard, the third handset in the range is the Samsung Corby TXT (Genio TXT) which is a low-end messaging handset. We also took a look at the rather strange Samsung B3310 messaging phone, and Vodafone proudly showed off their Samsung designed Vodafone 360 H1 smartphone.
The LG GW620 is LG's first Android based handset, and LG also refreshed the original "Chocolate" handset with the LG BL20 Chocolate. We also saw a glimpse of the impressively compact LG GD510 Pop touchscreen phone.
The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2 adds more features to the original XPERIA X1 to create a very competitive Windows smartphone. Sony Ericsson also gave a preview of the attractive but expensive Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness phone.
At long last, Motorola announced their first Android phone - the Motorola CLIQ or Motorola DEXT depending on market. Will it save Motorola? Perhaps. Palm also showed off its second WebOS device, the Palm Pixi which is heading to Sprint in the US. Will it save Palm? Probably not. The HTC Tattoo is a promising attempt to create a mid-market Android phone.
T-Mobile and Orange announced that they would merge their UK operations, Orange and Vodafone also announced that they would be carrying the iPhone 3G S, Orange by Christmas and Vodafone in the new year. O2 confirmed that the GSM version of the Palm Pre would launch in the UK on 16th October.
