Samsung S3500
Discontinued 3rd March 2009
This unassuming stainless steel slider
is the Samsung S3500. Priced at around 7500 roubles
or €165 SIM-free, the S3500 falls into the bottom end
of the midrange market segment.
What do you get for your money? Well,
there's a 2.2" 240 x 320 pixel display, a 2 megapixel
camera, FM radio, media player and stereo Bluetooth.
So,
exactly why would you choose the Samsung S3500 over
a phone like the Nokia
6300? We really can't think of any convincing reasons
why you wouldn't want to go for the Nokia alternative
- the 6300 is a hugely popular phone for a good reason.
There are a few things that the Samsung
S3500 can do which sets it very slightly apart from
the competition. A mobile tracker application allows
you to trace a stolen mobile, even when the SIM is swapped.
An SOS call function allows you to send a distress call
with a special keypress combination, and a fake call
facility allows you to generate a fake phone call to
get you out of difficult situations.
With these "safety features",
it is perhaps no surprise that the S3500 will end up
first in the country with the highest murder rate in
Europe: Russia. With a homicide rate ten times that
of most other European countries, these safety features
might just make the additional cost worthwhile.
However, we have also seen these safety
features in the Samsung
Tobi, so perhaps there really is a good market for
a mobile phone as a personal safety tool.
We're not sure exactly when the S3500
will go on sale, although we should imagine that it
is sometime over the next few weeks.
