Samsung F490 (SGH-F490) Preview
Discontinued 18th January 2008
Another touchscreen from Samsung, the
SGH-F490 is a 3.5G HSDPA device with a large
3.2 inch screen with an unusual 240 x 432 pixel resolution.
This is roughly a 16:9 ratio, indicating that the F490
is optimised for widescreen video playback if rotated
by ninety degrees.
The
Samsung F490 features the same "Croix" interface
found on the Samsung
Armani phone, which probably pitches the handset
directly against the iPhone
in terms of market appeal. The screen also has a type
of tactile feedback, so pressing the icons results
in a slight vibration, similar to Motorola's "haptic"
technology.
On the back is a 5 megapixel camera
with flash, but there is no mention of autofocus which
would be a serious omission on a camera of this type.
And although the F490 supports HSDPA high-speed data
in addition to 3G, the handset does not support WiFi.
Internal memory is 130MB, and this can
be expanded with microSD cards. The SGH-F490 also has
a standard 3.5mm socket for headphones, USB 2.0 and
Bluetooth 2.0. It's a relatively slim unit at 11.8mm
thick.
There's no wording on price or availability,
and Samsung haven't exactly been forthcoming with all
the technical details, but we would expect to see it
in the next few months.
