Originally announced
almost a year ago, the Nokia 770 started to trickle
out in late 2005. Nokia always said that there'd
be a major software upgrade in the works - the 2006
version of the OS is it.
The 2006 version of the software adds
Google Talk, an improved on-screen keyboard, better
memory management and a redesigned interface. The new
OS can also support SIP-based VOIP solutions.
Of
course, the Nokia 770 has always been an oddity in Nokia's
line-up as it lacks a phone or GPRS or 3G data, instead
relying on WiFi or a Bluetooth connection to another
handset. And early devices had teething problems, as
discussed in our
review. But as it runs Linux, the open source community
have been very busy porting applications to Nokia's
Maemo
platform, which we understand has led to the development
of other similar devices during 2006.
The software update is planned to be
available during Q2 2006, and it can be downloaded
directly from Nokia. End-users can apply the software
update themselves from a Windows-based PC. There's no
word about a Mac or Linux updater, which is a little
odd considering that this is a Linux device.
Mobile Gazette will look at the
new version of the OS when it becomes available and
we'll post a review.
