The Vodafone 845 is a low-cost Android 2.1 phone that offers a basic but practical handset to those who might have struggled to afford an Android smartphone before.
Vodafone have been a big supporter of Android, currently stocking the HTC Desire, HTC Legend, HTC Tattoo and Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 plus the Google Nexus One soon, and in most stores these Android phones are more prominent than the iPhone that Vodafone also now sells. This is quite a basic Android handset, similar to the HTC Tattoo in terms of hardware specification. There's a 2.8" 240 x 320 pixel display, a 3.2 megapixel camera, 3.5G support, WiFi and built-in GPS. The 845 also includes an FM radio, microSD memory slot, Bluetooth 2.1 and a fairly large 1200 mAh battery.
The software is the latest version of Android, which is 2.1. This comes with a very wide range of applications either preloaded or available for download from the Android market (at the last count there were 30,000 apps available). In addition, Vodafone have integrated the 845 into their 360 service, which brings social networking support and other features. Vodafone are quite keen to push 360, so including it in their own brand Android phone seems sensible. There's no word on pricing, but we guess that the Vodafone 845 should be available to prepay customers in the UK for about £200 or less, and it should be free for all contract customers. The 845 is slated to be available in Vodafone stores from May onwards.
