The Sony Xperia tipo is a compact smartphone that runs Android
4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, aimed at the value end of
the smartphone market.
There will be two versions of the Xperia tipo, the standard one
is a single-SIM device but there will also be an Xperia tipodual
which will be a dual-SIM device, something that is still pretty
rare in the Android world.
On the front of the Xperia tipo is a smallish 3.2" 320 x
480 pixel shatterproof display. On the back is a basic 3.2 megapixel
camera with VGA resolution video capture. Inside is an 800MHz Snapdragon
processor with 512MB of RAM. Internal flash storage is 2.9GB (with
2.5GB available to the user) and there's also a microSD slot.
All
the usual Android features are here such as 3.5G support, WiFi,
GPS and Bluetooth. The standard Android 4.0 software has several
Sony enhancements, especially when it comes to multimedia.
The Xperia tipo weighs a fraction under 100 grams, measures 103
x 57 x 13mm and has a 1500 mAh battery capable of giving up to 4.5
hours talktime and 22 days standby on 3G (although as ever, real-world
usage will use the battery more quickly).
Sony say that the Xperia tipo should be available during Q3 2012
in white, red, blue and black colours. No guidance was given on
price, but the Xperia tipo is designed to appeal to consumers buying
their first smartphone, so we are expecting to see a retail price
of about €150 SIM-free when it hits the shops.
