Sony Ericsson W810i / W810c

 Sony Ericsson W810 Discontinued
5th January 2006

A revision to the popular W800 "Walkman" phone, the Sony Ericsson W810 is a fairly minor upgrade, featuring an improved keypad layout for playing back multimedia, and it's now a quad band GSM handset, rather than tri-band. Sony Ericsson have also added EDGE high speed data, allowing quicker access to the internet for those who have a compatible carrier - and the W810 also supports over-the-air music downloads, so EDGE will be a real advantage for those who have it.

There are two models available - the W810c is for mainland China, and the W810i is for Europe, the Americas, Asia Pacific and the rest of the world. Quad band support will really help Sony Ericsson to make some market penetration in the United States.

All the other features in the W810i are essentially the same as the W800i (and also K750i and D750i). The excellent 2 megapixel autofocus camera remains, and there's a 176x220 pixel TFT display in 265,000 colours, email client and web browser, Bluetooth, USB and infrared connectivity, Java and a speakerphone. Of course, what makes the Walkman range of handsets appealing is the integrated multimedia player and Sony Ericsson's Disc2Phone software that allows users to easily transfer tracks from CD to the handset.

The internal memory is just 20Mb, but the W810 comes bundled with a 512Mb Memory Stick Pro Duo card, expandable to 2Gb which will be enough for plenty of tracks. There's a flight mode too, so the phone functions can be turned off when needed, but users can still access the music player. The W810 also has an FM radio. The battery life is impressive, with up to 8 hours talktime.

The W800i was our favourite phone of 2005, and the W810i is likely to be an excellent handset if its predecessor is anything to go by. The W810 will start to ship in Q1 2006.
