30th September 2010

Tablets and high-end smartphones made the headlines during September, as manufacturers start to announce devices that will be in the shops for Christmas.

HTC

The HTC Desire is shaping up to be the one of the very best phones of 2010, HTC are determined to build on the success of this Android smartphone by extending the Desire brand to other devices. The HTC Desire HD has a bigger screen, faster processor and plenty of improvements over the original Desire, but it is quite a lot bigger. The HTC Desire Z takes a similar approach to the original, but with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and support for HSPA+ networks. T-Mobile's own branded version of the HTC Desire Z is the T-Mobile G2, bound for customers in the US.

Motorola

The GSM version of the DROID 2, the Motorola Milestone 2 Android smartphone takes last year's Milestone and gives it more memory, a faster processor and a better keyboard. Another Android device is the Motorola DEFY, a rare ruggedised touchscreen phone that has a better chance of surviving contact with the real world.

Nokia

Nokia have been busy this month, not just with new handset releases but also with a change of CEO. On the phone front, the high-end Nokia E7 is pitched as a Communicator class device and features a large 4" touchscreen and Symbian^3. The Nokia C6-01 is another Symbian^3 touchscreen device to be sold alongside the similar but slightly more upmarket Nokia C7. Touchscreens are everywhere with Nokia this month, and the Nokia C3 Touch and Type brings basic touchscreen functions to an utterly traditional Nokia monoblock design.

Samsung

Firmly in the tablet category, the Samsung Galaxy Tab combines Android with a 7" display in a device that competes against the iPad. A very different device is the rugged Samsung B2710 which offers a traditional 3G phone with GPS in very tough package.

Other manufacturers

A very big tablet from a big-name manufacturer, the Toshiba Folio 100 also looks to offer pretty good value for money. LG also previewed their LG Optimus 7 phone running the upcoming Windows 7 operating system. Finally, RIM showed their new BlackBerry Playbook tablet which takes the risky approach of bringing an entirely new operating system to the market.
