Samsung S730i, L600 and P260

30th July 2007

Three recent handsets to be launched in the near future by Samsung, aimed at very different markets while still retaining Samsung's now typical "slider" arrangement.

Samsung S730i (SGH-S730i)

The Samsung S730i is an i-mode phone that comes out at time when many carriers outside Japan are dropping support for i-mode devices.

It's a lightweight slider phone, coming in at 83 grams. The main features are a 2 megapixel camera, 176x220 pixel display, microSD expandable memory and stereo Bluetooth. The SGH-S730i supports GPRS and EDGE data only, but then i-mode works quite well at slower data speeds.

There's also a close relative called the SGH-S720i which has a paltry 128x160 pixel display and 1.2 megapixel camera which is probably best avoided.

Overall, the Samsung S730i looks to be a decent enough low-cost i-mode handset if your mobile network is continuing to support such devices.

Samsung L600 (SGH-L600)

Not too far removed from the S730i in terms of specification, the main distinguishing feature of the Samsung L600 is its unusual purple/violet colour.

It has a 176x220 pixel display, 1.3 megapixel camera, MP3 player, Bluetooth and microSD expandable memory plus an FM radio and multimedia player. The specification isn't much to write home about, but on the other hand the SGH-L600 weighs just 84 grams. Certainly it will turn a few heads when it comes to looks, but it does seem to be a pretty good multimedia phone too.

Samsung P260 (SGH-P260)

The Samsung P260 looks positively retro compared to many recent handsets from this Korean manufacturer, but this device has a clever trick up it sleeve - it supports UMA VOIP access. If you don't know what that means.. well, you can make internet voice calls if you have a suitable UMA gateway attached to your wireless network.

Despite the looks, the SGH-P260 is pretty up-to-date in most of its specifications, with a 240x320 pixel display, MP3 player, Bluetooth and microSD expandable memory. As with most of the current crop of Samsung phones, the SGH-P260 is a GSM-only device supporting GPRS and EDGE data. It's also a little heavy for a 2G phone at 119 grams, even when taking into account that P260's WiFi.

The SGH-P260 is really only worth considering if you are going to use UMA, else there are plenty of other sliders in Samsung's range that will be better suited.
