Samsung B130, B210, B510, E215, M200 and P180

19th September 2008

A set of six recently announced low-cost handsets from Samsung, either available now or due out very soon. They may not be to everyone's taste, but if you're looking for something very low cost and practical, it could be that Samsung have a handset that will suit you.

Samsung B130 (SGH-B130)

Discontinued

Definitely a bargain basement device, the Samsung B130 has a basic 1.5" 128 x 128 pixel display and about 6 hours talktime and 10 days standby time. It's a very lightweight device at just 67 grams and it measures 104 x 44 x 16mm. It's just a dual-band GSM device, but it does have GPRS and also supports MP3 ringtones.

The Samsung B130 is widely available now (or soon) in Europe, Asia-Pacific and Latin America at a price of around €30 before tax. It's not going to win any prizes for looks, but this is a colour phone for the price of a monochrome one, which isn't bad.

Samsung B210 (SGH-B210 / Samsung Guru210)

Discontinued

A step up from the B130 in terms of specification and looks, the Samsung B210 has a larger 1.8" 128 x 160 pixel display, MP3 ringtones and an FM radio. The 850 mAh battery provides almost 9 hours of talktime and a staggering 24 days standby time (at least according to Samsung's figures).

Samsung's published specifications say that the B210 has Bluetooth (we don't think it does), video recording (it doesn't have a camera), an MP3 player (it only has 480KB of memory) so it is unlikely. In India, the B210 is sold as the Guru210, and we think that Samsung India are closer to the mark when it comes to specifications.

The retail price for the Samsung B210 appears to be around 2400 rupees or 40 euro or so. The SGH-B210 is available in India, possibly with Europe to follow at a later date.

Samsung B510 (SGH-B510)

Discontinued

A basic tri-band slider phone, the Samsung B510 supports MP3 ringtones and has 4MB of memory which is enough for a few carefully-edited tracks. There's a basic 1.8" 128 x 160 pixel display in 65,000 colours, Bluetooth 2.0 and USB 2.0 plus a WAP browser, GPRS and EDGE data plus Java support.

Maximum talktime is 8 hours with up to 12 days standby time, and the B510 weighs 93 grams and measures 95 x 47 x 18mm.

Samsung E215 (SGH-E215)

Discontinued

The Samsung E215 is a handset that favours music playback and Bluetooth connectivity over other features. The basic 2.0" 128 x 160 pixel screen and VGA resolution camera will not appeal to many, but on the other hand the microSD expandable memory, FM radio, dedicated media playback keys and Bluetooth might be attractive to others.

The E215 is currently for sale in South America for the equivalent of about €130, including a 512MB microSD card, which is very good value for money. It's a very attractive looking handset in a wide variety of colours, so overall this looks like an appealing handset for music on a budget.

Samsung M200 (SGH-M200)

Discontinued

Sporting a two-tone look not unlike the Nokia 6300, the Samsung M200 is a slightly strange combination of budget features. There's a 1.9" 128 x 160 pixel display, combined with a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth 2.0 microSD expandable memory, a multimedia player and an FM radio.

Samsung haven't given any guidance on pricing or availability, hopefully the M200 won't be too expensive.

Samsung P180 (SGH-P180)

Discontinued

With a design that echoes back to the classic Samsung E700, the Samsung P180 appears on the surface to be a very basic clamshell phone, with a 2.0" 128 x 160 pixel screen and VGA resolution camera. However, the P180 actually comes with WiFi enabling it to be used for UMA Internet telephone calls when used with Orange's Unik Voice-Over-IP package.

The P180 also has Bluetooth and USB connectivity. Although the P180 can play back MP3 music, it lacks a microSD slot and the internal 14MB of memory is really only enough for a couple of tracks.

The SIM-free price for the P180 in France is a fairly expensive €249, but since it makes most sense when bought with an Orange package then the price varies from €149 to €9.
