Samsung M110 (Samsung SGH-M110 / Samsung Solid)

 Samsung M110 Discontinued
7th January 2008

The first ruggedised phone that we've seen from the Samsung stable, the SGH-M110 (also called the "Samsung Solid") is a basic but very tough handset that competes directly with the likes of the JCB TOUGHPHONE / Sonim XP1.

If you're in the market for this type of phone, then the SGH-M110's IEC 60529 rating is IP54 - which means that the Samsung Solid is highly resistant to dust and water splashes. It should be able to withstand a 1 metre drop onto a concrete surface too.

Samsung Solid (SGH-M110) Most of the protection is afforded by the thick rubber casing which effectively seals the M110 against the elements and provides shock adsorbing properties. Clad in either a black or olive green housing, the M110 / Solid looks a little more toned down than it's JCB-branded competition. It's also a smaller and significantly lighter handset than the TOUGHPHONE too, at just 95 grams compared to 130 grams for its rival.

Underneath, the Samsung M110 / Samsung Solid is a fairly basic but practical phone. The 1.5" 128 x 128 pixel CSTN display is never going to win many fans, but it does come with Bluetooth, an FM radio, WAP 2.0 browser, a VGA resolution (0.3 megapixel) camera with a flash that can be used as a torch and it comes with a large capacity battery that gives the M110 an impressive 8 hours maximum talktime with up to 16 days standby time.

One thing that tends to be surprising about these durable handsets is how basic they are - the M110 and most of the competition are pretty underwhelming in terms of technical features. It would be nice to see this type of shock-adsorbing design on higher specification devices - anyone who has tried to bounce a Nokia N95 off a concrete floor will probably understand why.

The Samsung M110 is available now in several different markets throughout Europe. We understand that O2 will be carrying this device in the UK.
