Samsung i7110 (GT-i7110)
Discontinued 20th October 2008
We first gave you a glimpse of the
Samsung i7110 a few
days ago, and now Samsung have confirmed details
of this powerful but conventional looking Symbian smartphone.
The understated design hides the fact
that the i7110 is only slightly less impressive than
the acclaimed Samsung
i8510. On the back is a 5 megapixel camera with
autofocus and flash, the main display is a 2.6"
AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic LED) display that should
give bright, sharp colours. Inside the i7110 is a dual-band
UMTS 900 / 2100 device with quad-band GSM, HSDPA data
support and WiFi. The i7110 also has a GPS receiver,
and unusually it comes with an FM transmitter that allows
it to play back over a car or home radio (assuming that
it is legal to use in your country). Of course, the
i7110 has microSD expandable memory, Bluetooth 2.0 and
USB 2.0 as well.
The
i7110 runs the clumsily named Symbian OS V9.3, S60
3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 operating system.. which
is basically the same thing that you'll find on a Nokia
smartphone. We don't know if Samsung have enhanced the
interface in the way that they did with the i8510, but
from press photographs it does seem to include at least
some elements from its big brother. The navigation pad
can be used as a mouse, and the i7110 has an accelerometer
which should mean that it changes screen orientations
automatically.
The digital imaging features look particularly
impressive. In addition to the 5 megapixel sensor, autofocus
and LED flash, the i7110 has face detection features
and can capture VGA resolution video (640 x 480 pixels)
at 30 frames per second, or QVGA video at 120 frames
per second, which is useful for slow-motion playback.
In conjunction with the GPS receiver, the camera can
geotag images with the picture's location.
You want more? Well, the Samsung i7110
can play back DivX movies, plus all the usual formats
including MP3, Windows Media and RealPlayer formats.
There's an FM radio, and as we already mentioned, the
i7110 is one of only a small number of phones to feature
an FM transmitter.
The GPS functionality comes with a driving
map and a pedestrian map of major European cities. Another
clever feature is that the satellite navigation function
also uses the FM transmitter, so you can listed to spoken
directions on your car's loudspeakers.
Powerful devices such as this can drain
the battery pretty quickly, so fortunately Samsung have
installed a large 1200 mAh cell that can power the i7110
for up to 6 hours talktime on 3G and 11 hours on GSM,
with a standby time of around 17 or 18 days. The i7110
is a little larger than you might expect at 118 x 52
x 13mm, although Samsung haven't said how much this
multimedia monster will weigh.. or how much it will
cost.
There's no doubt that the Samsung i7110
is a very impressive bit of kit, and along with the
i8510 it provides some serious competition for Nokia
in the Symbian smartphone market. Samsung say that the
i7110 should start to be available in Europe from November.
