Samsung Galaxy Grand |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Available
now The Samsung Galaxy Grand is a big-screen smartphone with a 5" display that is a little smaller than the Galaxy Note II, but where the Galaxy Note II is a high-end device, the Galaxy Grand is a bit more modest than you might think.
Although the Galaxy Grand's 5" display is only a little smaller than the screen on the Note II, the resolution is significantly less at just 480 x 800 pixels compared to 800 x 1280 pixels on the bigger handset. The Galaxy Note II has more than 3 times the pixel count of the Grand, so the Note II's display is significantly sharper.. but crucially it is also significantly more expensive. This trend towards big but relatively low-resolution displays has been a significant feature during 2012, kicked off in part by the surprising success of the Nokia Lumia 900 which demonstrated that a lot of customers were more interested in having a big screen than what the resolution was. Inside the Galaxy Grand is a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal flash memory plus a microSD slot. On the back is an 8 megapixel camera with a 2 megapixel one on the front for self-portraits and video calling.
The operating system is Android 4.1.2 with Samsung's own enhancements, including a Multi Window feature that allows more than one application to be viewed at a time, plus smart alerts and voice control. Of course, you can choose and download from a massive range of add-on applications too. The Samsung Galaxy Grand is an HSPA+ capable device with maximum download speeds of up to 21Mbps. It supports WiFi, USB and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity and it comes with GPS and GLONASS positioning systems. Inside, the Galaxy Grand packs an accelerometer, digital compass, proximity sensor, gyroscope and a light sensor.
Obviously, this is quite a big device at 144 x 77 x 9.6mm and 162 grams, and inside is a fairly large 2100 mAh battery. This handset might not be everyone's first choice - we suspect that the display is going to be too coarse for a lot of potential customers - but it is an option that consumers now have, and we suspect that rival manufacturers will be watching the success (or not) of the Galaxy Grand with interest. There will be both a dual-SIM version (the GT-I9082) and a single-SIM version (GT-I9080) with the dual-SIM version coming to market first. We don't know how much the Galaxy Grand will cost (our guess is about €370 SIM-free), which markets it will ship to or when it will be available, but we would anticipate that the Galaxy Grand will be available in most major markets in one form or another. |
