Samsung D980 DuoS (SGH-D980)
Discontinued 5th September 2008
The Samsung D980 is the third handset in the Samsung
DuoS range after the D880
and D780,
a device capable of taking two SIM cards which essentially
makes it two mobile phones in one.
The main selling proposition of the two previous
phones was the dual-SIM arrangement, but the D980 is
an interesting phone in its own right. Featuring a 2.6"
320 x 240 pixel touchscreen display and a 5 megapixel
camera with autofocus and flash, the D980 pitches itself
at the higher end of the market.
There's also an FM radio, and as you would expect
there is a multimedia player, microSD expandable memory,
web browser and email client plus a document viewer.
It makes a few compromises - the Samsung D980 isn't
a 3G device (Samsung don't seem to have cracked the
dual SIM arrangement for UMTS yet), video capture isn't
as good as the similarly specced LG
KU990, and it's a slightly heavy device at 117 grams
and 98 x 55 x 16mm (presumably in part due to the larger
battery that DuoS devices need). WiFi would have been
nice too.
We have covered the DuoS system before, so we will
just briefly recap that it's very easy to use and gives
two completely separate profiles.. it really is like
having two different physical handsets in one unit.
There's no word on pricing or availability at present,
but we would expect the D980 to be available only as
a SIM free handset because the SIM arrangement makes
it very unlikely that any carrier would want to subsidise
it.
