Samsung B300 and M310 (SGH-B300, SGH-M310)

Discontinued
14th April 2008

A couple of very inexpensive handsets due for launch this summer, the Samsung  B300 and M310 devices are aimed at those who want something one step up from the absolute cheapest phones on the market.

A low cost and lightweight clamshell, coming in at 78 grams, the B300's main selling feature is the attractive patterns on the outside of the case. Inside, Samsung say that the B300 has a easy-to-use layout, which appears to be in a classic Samsung fashion.

There's not much to look at - a very basic 1.5" 128 x 128 pixel display, FM radio, Java support and WAP browser are the main features. The Samsung B300 supports MP3 ringtones, but doesn't have a full-blown media player. This is just a dual band GSM phone, but for most customers that won't matter.

Talktime is 3 hours with 8 days standby time. The price hasn't been confirmed, but we expect the B300 to cost around €65 / £50 SIM free at launch and it should hit the shops in the early summer. Of course, the B300 will be much cheaper if bought in a prepay bundle.

One step above the B300 is the M310. Again, the hardware specification is a bit of a blast from the past, but Samsung have tried to inject a bit of style into proceedings. The display is a 1.7" 128 x 160 pixel panel with a smaller 1" external display.

The SGH-M310 has Bluetooth, an FM radio and a WAP browser, plus Java and MP3 ringtones. There's a VGA resolution camera and the M310 has up to 3 hours talktime and a maximum of 12 days standby time. It has quad-band GSM support as well.

The price is unconfirmed, but probably around €90 / £70 SIM Free, and much cheaper when bought as part of a pay-as-you-go package. Expect to see the M310 in mid summer.

Despite a few cosmetic improvements, there's no getting away from the fact that these are pretty basic handsets. But if you're looking for an inexpensive, good looking clamshell phone then the M310 and B300 might be just the things to interest you.
