Samsung B2700 (GT-B2700)

 Samsung B2700 Discontinued
5th September 2008

The rugged Samsung B2700 can be thought of as a follow-up to the Samsung M110 Solid, but this time the B2700 is a much improved phone. It still favours toughness over features, but it certainly covers most modern essentials.

The casing is made from urethane, which protects the B2700 against water, dust and bumps to IP54 standards. The phone isn't indestructible, but this does mean that it should survive almost everything that you can throw at it.. literally.

It's a 3G phone with tri-band GSM support, Bluetooth, USB connectivity, an FM radio, multimedia player and microSD expandable memory. On the back is a basic but useful 2 megapixel camera plus a video calling camera on the front. The display is only a 1.9" 176 x 220 pixel panel rather than the standard 240 x 320 pixels we tend to see, but on the other hand this is much better than the 128 x 128 pixel unit in the M110.

Samsung B2700 Unusually, the Samsung B2700 comes with an altimeter, compass and pedometer. There's also a built-in LED torch, which is something we would like to see more phones have as standard.

The high-capacity 1300 mAh battery can drive the B2700 for up to 5 hours talktime and 14 days standby time, presumably on 3G. It's quite a large device at 115 x 52 x 18mm, but this shouldn't matter to the sort of people who are interested.

Although the B2700 seems to be aimed at people who enjoy outdoors leisure pursuits, it should suit anyone who works in a dirty or wet environment.. and we must say that it looks great too, so we suspect that some people will just want it because of the excitingly chunky design. At least it's a more environmentally friendly thing to own than a massive four wheel drive.

Samsung say the the B2700 should be available from September in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and other major markets. Unfortunately, no pricing information was available at the time of going to press.
