Sagem myX-8

 Sagem myX-8 Discontinued
16th November 2004

Sagem are probably best known for their low-cost phones aimed primarily at the pay-as-you-go market, but they've been steadily improving over the past 12 months in terms of technical ability and design. Many of Sagem's latest handsets are very competitive in terms of features with the "big names" such as Nokia. In fact, Nokia is suing Sagem over the design of the myX5-2, claiming that the overall look of the phone is too much like a Nokia.

But we digress. The plain fact of the matter is that most Sagems sell primarily on price, and even the recently announced Sagem myS-7 smartphone is really only interesting because of the good value for money it represents.

So, the Sagem myX-8 is a bit of a first, because it's the first Sagem that we've seen that's extremely desirable in it's own right, and not because of how much it costs.

Pictures of the myX-8 have been floating around the web for a while, but Sagem have only just confirmed the specification with the bare minimum of details, however it does look very good in technical terms

First of all, there's a large 320x240 (QVGA) pixel display in 262,000 colours, which is one of the largest displays in pixel terms of any handset on the market. Added to that is a 1.3 megapixel digital camera with 8X digital zoom, Bluetooth, and multimedia playback. The Sagem myX-8 also supports Java, tri-band GSM, GPRS and WAP, plus MP3 ringtones.

At the moment Sagem aren't confirming all the details, but the myX-8 is thought to have a miniSD slot for memory expansion (useful with the high resolution camera). The operating system on the myX-8 is also unclear, but some unconfirmed rumour say that it's a Windows-based phone. The handset is also believed to have an email client plus USB and infra-red connectivity. Size, weight and battery life are also unconfirmed.

However, the phone does look quite good, and is just about a class leader in terms of specifications, certainly in the top half dozen handsets in terms of technical ability anyway. We hope to get some more information about this handset soon, please subscribe to our newsletter for updates.
