Palm Treo 750v
Discontinued 13th September 2006
The Palm Treo 750v is Palm's first 3G
device, available exclusively on the Vodafone network
in Europe, a device that we first
featured back in July. As with the Palm Treo 700w,
this is a Windows device rather than a PalmOS one.
It's a Windows Mobile 5.2 device with
a 1.3 megapixel camera, 240x240 pixel display, and the
Treo 750v has stereo Bluetooth and miniSD expandable
memory. There's 128Mb of internal memory, 60Mb of which
is available to the user.
Vodafone support both Exchange Push
Email and BlackBerry Connect on the Treo 750v, plus
it supports standard internet email protocols, so it
should be a good proposition for corporate customers.
We
said that it's a 3G device, and in fact the Palm Treo
750v supports UMTS 850, 1900 and 2100 so it can be used
on North America UMTS networks as well as European
ones. On top of that, the Palm Treo 750v has quad-band
GSM, GPRS and EDGE data so it can be used pretty much
anywhere outside of a 3G coverage area. However, there's
no WiFi support on the Treo 750v, nor does it support
video calling.
It's a more compact device than the
Treo 700w, even though it weighs a significant 154 grams,
the Treo 750v is actually 15% lighter than the previous
model. Overall, the Treo 750v measures 111x58x22mm and
has a maximum talktime of 4.5 hours with up to 10 days
standby time.
The software on the Treo 750v is the
standard Windows Mobile stuff, including pocket versions
of Office applications, a PDF viewer and web browser.
Palm have added some enhancements though, and the 750v
will also be tailored for Vodafone, so it won't be quite
a vanilla implementation.
It's a decent looking handset with an
impressive amount of features, but corporate customers
might not be so keen on the "fun" features
of the camera and multimedia player. However, Palm haven't
had much of a presence in Europe lately and even the
old Treo
650 was recently withdrawn from sale as it didn't
meet EU environmental standards. This particular market
segment is beginning to get crowded too, although to
its credit, the Treo 750v will be available in the next
few months, rather than being a "coming soon"
phone that you have to wait ages for.
Vodafone and Palm say that the Treo
750v will be available in the UK from October 2006,
presumably with other Vodafone regions following afterwards.
However, Vodafone UK is notoriously reluctant to sell
devices such as this to consumers, so if you're a private
user you may be out of luck.
