Nokia 7270

 Nokia 7270 open Discontinued
9th September 2004

The Nokia 7270 is an elegant clamshell phone, perhaps the replacement for Nokia first mass-market clamshell, the 7200. Part of the Nokia 7260/7270/7280 series of products, the 7270 stands out by being practical, attractive and fairly capable at the same time.

Primarily, the 7270 is designed to be a fashion phone, however behind the interesting styling, the Nokia 7270 is pretty much a standard low-end clamshell, and in specification terms in not much better than the odd-looking Nokia 2650.

The 7270's screen is 128x160 pixels in 65,000 colours, with a VGA resolution digital camera (640x480 pixels) that can take video clips. There's a smaller external display too. This is a tri-band GSM phone supporting GPRS, EDGE and HSCSD data. The Nokia 7270 features Push-To-Talk (PTT), an XHTML browser, email support and all the ususual things like MMS. The 7270 also has Java and polyphonic ringtones, PC synchronisation and voice commands. There's no Bluetooth or removable memory though (even though the 7270 features digital rights management control for media playback).

Nokia 7270 closed This isn't a small phone, as the Nokia 7270 measures 88x46x22mm and weighs 121 grams, which is about standard for a clamshell. Talktime is up to 4 hours, and the 7270 has up to 11 days standby time.

In fashion terms, the 7270 uses a combination of materials, including interchangeable fabric covers (a little like the 7200). Styling wise it's a bit of a mishmash, but it works quite well on the clamshell form factor and it's a much more attractive phone than the hideous 7260.

The Nokia 7270 is perhaps the phone that the 7200 should have been. Although the specification isn't wonderful (and not a patch on the class-leading Sharp GX30), it's a competent enough phone with interesting looks which should see it sell well when it hits the shops.

Planned for release in the fourth quarter of 2004.
