Nokia
6303i
Available now
A slightly tweaked version of the 6303,
the Nokia 6303i has better battery life, improved support for social
networking, a new paint job and a reduced price tag of just €105.
The 6303 was a drop-in replacement for the old 6300,
offering a very similar feature set. Like the 6300 and 6303, the
6303i is a GSM-only device. The screen is a pretty standard 2.2"
240 x 320 pixel panel, there is a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus
and dual flash on the back, microSD expandable memory (with a 2GB
card in the box), there's a multimedia player and an FM radio,
a 3.5mm audio socket, plus Bluetooth and USB connectivity.
Inside is a large 1050 mAh battery, providing up to 8 hours talktime
and 21 days standby time, and the whole package comes in at a reasonable
96 grams.
The lack of 3G support makes web access a pain, but if your main
concerns are talking, texting, music playback and the occasional
stills photograph then the 6303i looks like cracking value for money.
Nokia say that the 6303i should be available this quarter in
matt black, chestnut, steel, pink, white/silver and khaki/gold colour
schemes.
Nokia X6 16GB
Available
now
Usually Nokia likes to add a little extra to new handset releases,
but in the case of the X6 16GB they have taken a couple of
things away.
As you can probably guess, the "16GB" in the phone's
name refers to the internal memory which has been halved from the
32GB available in the original version. Nokia have also removed
with Comes With Music free downloads, a service that has only had
a moderate success. The result is that this version of the X6 costs
a lot less. In the UK, the X6
32GB retails at a staggering £449 (€515) directly from
Nokia, the X6 16GB is a slightly more modest £299 (€340).
That's still a lot more expensive than the £199 (€230)
that Nokia charge for a plain old 5800,
and even with these price reductions the X6 looks over-priced.
Anyway, if you've been holding off on the X6 waiting for a price
drop, then now is your chance. The X6 16GB is available to pre-order
now.
Ovi
Maps with Free Navigation
Available now
At the end of last month, Nokia announced that some of its smartphones
will now able to download Ovi Maps with free turn-by-turn navigation.
In the two weeks since launch, the application has been downloaded
1.4 million times, which isn't bad considering that it only works
on a limited number of devices at present.
This isn't an entirely altruistic move by Nokia - Google's inclusion
of free turn-by-turn navigation in the Motorola
DROID shook the market up, and Nokia is simply responding to
Google by leveraging its ownership of mapping firm Navteq. Competitors
of Nokia and Google are now presumably weighing their options carefully.
The new version of maps is compatible with most recent popular
Symbian smartphones including the 5800,
X6, N97
and 5230.
