Motorola RIZR

 Motorola RIZR Expected Q3/Q4 2006
25th July 2006

Originally codenamed the "Capri", the cleverly named Motorola RIZR (or MOTORIZR) is a RAZR-style sliding phone - Motorola's first for Western markets.

It's a little hard to see in these pictures, but in fact beneath the numeric keypad, the RIZR's design features the "step" that's a characteristic of the RAZR line of handsets. This is something that was missing from Motorola's MS600 RAZR Z, a CDMA handset aimed at the Korean market.

Motorola RIZR closed Initial reports say that Motorola have spent a lot of time getting the sliding mechanism just right, resulting in a handset that feels as if it is very high quality. It's certainly a distinctive looking device too, and Motorola have been clever in including many RAZR family features into the design of the Motorola RAZR.

On the back of the Motorola RIZR is a 2 megapixel camera with a flash. On the front is a typical 1.9" 176x220 pixel display. The Motorola RAZR takes microSD (TransFlash) expandable memory, stereo Blueooth, an MP3 player and support for EDGE data. In fact, overall the RIZR is pretty unsurprising when it comes to technical specifications.

It's not as smart looking as the new Motorola K1, and perhaps the RAZR design doesn't lend itself entirely to this kind of format. Having said that, it's a tidy looking device and people will be interested to look at it because it looks very much like a RAZR in some respects.. but very different in others. It will be available in a variety of different colours at launch.

Motorola say that the RIZR should be available from the second half of 2006.
