The Motorola
RAZR V3 has been one of the best-selling handsets
of 2005, and has helped Motorola gain a significant
slice of market share. In an attempt to spread the "halo
effect" around, Motorola have also announced the
Motorola
RAZR V3x 3G phone, SLVR
ultra-slim bar format device and the pretty PEBL
clamshell.
But one significant problem for Motorola
has been that if you look past the RAZR V3's striking
exterior, the phone isn't really all that good and is
little different from the Motorola V500
series in technical terms.. so it's basically
two years out of date. This is a significant problem
for Motorola as the RAZR V3 account for a very large
part of their sales.
The Motorola RAZR V3i is rumoured
to be an upgraded version of the V3, bringing it kicking
and screaming into.. err.. 2005. From what we've seen
of the V3i, it's a bronze coloured handset with few
cosmetic changes over the V3 (we understand the the
"M" logo now lights up though!).
Under the surface though, the RAZR V3i
seems to be much more interesting. Gone is the
old VGA resolution 0.3 megapixel camera, and in comes
a megapixel class camera instead (either 1.0 or 1.3
megapixels we think). Added to that, we understand is
a TransFlash (micro SD) memory slot and significantly,
we understand that the RAZR V3i also comes with the
sames iTunes software that is built into the ROKR.
These are not huge technical improvements,
but it's a significant better phone from the consumer's point
of view. Two of the weakest points with the old V3 was
the poor camera and lack of a multimedia player. From
what we can tell, the RAZR V3i addresses these issues.
If the Motorola RAZR V3i does
have iTunes (and we believe that it does), then it's
likely to be a significant boost to this Apple-Motorola
project. Sales of the ROKR have been disappointing and
the handset suffers from a very high return. Part of
the reason is the limitations of the iTunes software
(which will probably remain on the V3i), but also the
ROKR handset itself isn't very attractive. The big advantage
of the RAZR design is that it's already a style
icon, and the RAZR V3i's very stylish design should
complement iTunes's "hip" image at the same
time. Perhaps the RAZR V3i is the handset that Motorola
should have come out with first to showcase iTunes?
