Motorola A1010
Cancelled 14th February 2005
Essentially a progressive upgrade of
the well-received A1000, the A1010 is a Symbian based
3G smartphone with a 2 megapixel digital camera, Bluetooth,
expandable TransFlash memory and an impressive host
of other features.
The "A" class of 3G handsets
have always been class leaders, and with the A1010 Motorola
promise to keep leading the pack. To a certain extent,
the A1010 can be seen as a rival to handsets such as
the Sony Ericsson P910i, and although the A1010 lacks
the tiny QWERTY keyboard of its rival, it is hugely
ahead in other terms.
The Motorola A1010 supports 3G and tri-band
GSM/GPRS connectivity, and comes with a large 208x320
pixel touch-sensitive colour display. On the rear of
the A1010 is the 2 megapixel camera with 4X digital
zoom, with a VGA resolution sub-camera on the front
for video calling.
MP3s and video clips can be played back
on the A1010, and data can be stored on removable TransFlash
memory (if you can get hold of it). You can do more
than just play back media files, however, as the A1010
comes with the Picsel Document viewer which allows you
to read common Microsoft Office documents and PDF files.
As you'd guess, the Motorola A1010 comes with good PIM
(personal information management) functions and can
be synchronised with a PC using Bluetooth or a USB cable.
There's also an email client and web browser.
The A1010 supports downloadable Java
and Symbian applications, themes and polyphonic ringtones.
Where available it can also use A-GPS (global position
system) to help locate you and offer locally-relevant
content.
As with some of the other recently announced
Motorola handsets, this is scheduled for release towards
the end of 2005 and the supplied images are clearly
computer generated. Nonetheless, we think the A1010
is a useful looking handset and look forward to seeing
it.
