LG P7200

The LG P7200 is part of LG's attempt
to be seen as innovators in the mobile handset market,
and it's certainly a break from tradition for LG. Unlike
the recent S5200,
the LG P7200 is a highly distinctive handset that while
not totally innovative, does bring together a number
of useful elements into a well-featured handset.
It's quite a slim phone, measuring 96x50x17mm
and weighing 99 grams, somewhat thicker than the Motorola
RAZR but with a similar wide/thin look.
Open it up and there's a metallic keypad, again a little
like the RAZR, but the LG P7200 appears to have proper
buttons unlike the fiddly keys on the RAZR. Also inside
is a 176x220 pixel TFT display in 262,000 colours. On
the outside is a 96x96 pixel external display with external
media controls (like the Samsung
E720), and on the back the LG looks just like
a standard digital camera with the highly emphasised
lens (a little like a Sony Ericsson). The display also
swivels around, and this is something we first saw on
the old LG G7100 from 2003, and the LG P7200 also has
Bluetooth.
As
you can tell from the external media controls, the LG
P7200 is a music phone. It's capable of playing back MP3,
AAC/AAC+, Real and WMA files and it has a TransFlash
/ microSD memory slot capable of taking up to 512Mb
of memory in addition to the 64Mb already inside the
phone. The P7200 also plays back MPEG4 video.
The camera is a 2 megapixel unit with
a built-in flash. As you might suspect from the design,
you can operate the P7200 as a camera without opening
it up. Again, the expandable memory is useful here.
Video capture resolution is 208x160 pixels at 15fps
which isn't great, but is fairly typical.
The screen is a weakness though, although
176x220 pixel displays are pretty standard, in our view
the LG P7200 would benefit from a QVGA 240x320 pixel
panel. The swivelling function gives a great deal of
flexibility to picture taking, and also the external
display is quite large at 96x96 pixels.
This is a tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900
phone with GPRS, but no EDGE. It's not a 3G phone though,
although it is similar in many ways to the U880.
We'd very much like to see a 3G phone from LG with similar
styling features though, perhaps with a better screen.
The LG P7200 is a good looking handset
with a useful set of features. It should be available
in retail channels by Christmas.
