1st July 2011

For mobile phone manufacturers, Christmas starts in the middle of the year as handsets are announced that will hit the shops in Q3 and Q4.

Sony Ericsson

Quite a lot of devices from Sony Ericsson this month, including three feature phones. The Sony Ericsson Mix Walkman and Sony Ericsson txt pro are two very similar devices, the Mix Walkman has enhanced music capabilities and the txt pro has a slide-out keyboard, both are low-end touchscreen feature phones. The Sony Ericsson txt is a BlackBerry-style feature phone that will probably be very inexpensive. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Active is a compact and waterproof Android device, based on the Xperia Mini. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray takes all the features of the larger Xperia Arc but shrinks the package down to be more pocket friendly size.

Nokia

The impressive Nokia N9 smartphone is also something of a dead-end, and is probably the first and last Nokia handset to run the new MeeGo OS. An upgrade to the very traditional C5, the Nokia C5-00 5MP has a better camera and might appeal to those customers who don't like touchscreen smartphones. The Nokia C2-02, C2-03 and C2-06 are three closely related touchscreen sliders, two of which are dual-SIM, this time Series 40 feature phones rather than smartphones. We also took a "retro" look at the best-selling Nokia N95 from 2007 which continues to be popular today.

Motorola

Another feature phone, the Motorola WILDER is a simple, low cost touchscreen device that looks a little different from the competition. An Android smartphone with an unassuming name, the Motorola XT883 is the Chinese version of the upcoming Milestone 3 and DROID 3.

Other manufacturers

Already shipping in the US, but now coming to Europe, the HTC EVO 3D is a very powerful 3D Android smartphone. At the other end of the scale, the Emporia RL1 is designed to be incredibly easy to use and targets older consumers. Targeting the opposite age range is the MOJO Chat, a very cheap, cheerful and British youth oriented messaging phone. The Lava M30 is an attractive music phone from a relatively new Indian firm that looks very promising. Finally, the Panasonic Toughbook Tablet takes the features of the legendary Toughbook line and applies them to an Android tablet.
