Huawei aren't a very well-known name, but they've been in the
mobile device business for a long time, and the chances are that
if you have a 3G USB modem then it will be a Huawei device.
The Huawei Blaze (also known as the Blaze X3, IDEOS
X3 or U8510) is a low-cost Android smartphone that comes
in just under the magic £100 mark for a prepay handset. Although
it's a pretty basic device for an Android smartphone, you have to
bear in mind that it is still massively more powerful than most
competing prepay phones.
Running Android 2.3, the Blaze has a 3.2" 320 x 240 pixel
capacitive touchscreen, a 3.2 megapixel main camera with a secondary
camera for video calling, an FM radio, WiFi, 3.5G support, GPS,
microSD expandable memory (with 512MB of onboard flash) and Bluetooth.
The
processor is a basic 600 MHZ unit with 256Mb of RAM. You wouldn't
want to run very demanding applications, but it should cope with
all the basics. Inside is a 1200 mAh battery which should give a
reasonable amount of life on a fairly basic device such as this.
The Huawei Blaze measures 110 x 57 x 11mm and weighs 104 grams.
It's quite a good looking device, and when you consider that
for this money you are also getting a media player and turn-by-turn
satellite navigation then it looks very good value as well.
In the UK, Phones 4U will have this phone under the "Blaze"
name from the end of September for £99.95, so it will be in
the shops in plenty of time for Christmas. Elsewhere in Europe
the phone is available right now as the IDEOS X3, Blaze X3
or U8510 for about €150 SIM-free.
