HTC TyTN

 HTC TyTN Discontinued
15th June 2006

The HTC TyTN is a Windows Mobile 5.0 smartphone with 3G and 3.5G support, WiFi and a pull-out QWERTY keyboard.

Presumably pronounced "Titan", the TyTN is a dead ringer for the HTC Hermes / O2 XDA Trion to the extent that this either is the Hermes, or it's a very close relative.

The TyTN follows a now-familiar design that we've seen in other HTC devices, with a 240x320 pixel 2.8" touch-sensitive display that flips between lansdcape (wide) and portrait (tall) modes. There's also a 2 megapixel camera, 64Mb of internal memory with microSD expansion and WiFi support. The processor is a 400MHz Samsung unit.

HTC TyTN HTC say that the TyTN is HSDPA enabled, so presumably it should work with 3.5G out of the box. It also supports tri-band UMTS 850/1900/2100 MHz plus GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz with GPRS and EDGE. Add to that 802.11b and 802.11g wireless ethernet, and the HTC TyTN is easily the best connected device we've ever seen. (850 and 1900 MHz UMTS networks are being rolled out in North America).

Windows Mobile 5.0 comes with the usual array of applications to work with the internet and Microsoft Office documents, plus Windows Media Player. It also supports Microsoft's Push Email solution. The TyTN supports video calling, voice dialling and has a built-in handsfree speakerphone function. Of course, you'll probably want to use a Bluetooth headset rather hold the 176 gram TyTN to your ear every time you want to make a call.

Talktime is up to 5 hours on GSM (with the screen off) or a maximum of 4 hours on UMTS. Standby time is up to 10 days, with around 8-12 hours of media playback. Of course, these are maximum times and 3G, Bluetooth, WiFi and the large screen will tend to drain power more quickly.

HTC say that the TyTN will be available in Europe from July 2006 onwards in black or silver.
