HTC S730

 HTC S730 Expected October 2007
1st October 2007

The HTC S730 is a pretty decent phone, but let's get on thing out of the way first - it's a pretty ugly phone too. There's a touch of East German prison cell about the S730's looks, with gun metal grey casing and a frankly unattractive overall layout.

At first glance this is a pretty conventional looking device, but it does boast a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and that's not all. The S730 is an HSDPA capable 3.5G smartphone with WiFi running the Windows Mobile 6 operating system. The processor has been doubled in clock speed from its predecessor, and now runs at 400 MHz.

There's a 2.4" QVGA display, although it's not a touchscreen, microSD expandable memory to add to the 256MB of internal Flash and Stereo Bluetooth.

On the back of the HTC S730 is a 2 megapixel camera, which will be ideal for snapping photographs of people recoiling in horror at just how bleakly depressing the back of the S730 actually looks.

HTC S730 The interface has been tweaked a little, giving the S730 the "HTC Home" screen, although as you can see from the photograph above this is a pretty monochrome affair which really does nothing to jolly the phone up.

Because this is a Windows mobile phone, the S730 can work with Microsoft Office documents, playback a variety of multimedia files and work with push email and standard internet protocols. The slide-out keypad really gives the S730 the best of both worlds - it's quite usable as a standard mobile phone, but also easy to use for messaging.

Size and weight were not confirmed at the time of going to press, but the S730 replaces a handset that measured 101 x 50 x 18mm and weighed 120 grams, so expect it to be about the same.

HTC say that the S730 will be available from October 2007 onwards, but did not give any pricing information.
