Sony Ericsson W800 / W800i / W800c

 Sony Ericsson W800i Discontinued
1st March 2005

The Sony Ericsson W800 is a long-rumoured Walkman branded phone that attempts to combine the features of a digital music player, mobile phone and camera into the one device.

It's certainly an impressive and snazzy-looking phone, with up to 30 hours playback time, a powerful set of audio playback applications, 2 megapixel digital camera,  FM radio and a 512Mb Sony Memory Stick Duo bundled in, but the W800 is certainly no iPod killer.

There are plenty of good points here - the device weighs just 100 grams and it seems to be easy to use, both on the handset itself and by using Sony Ericsson's Disk2Phone software to transfer CD tracks to the W800. It can play back MP3 and AAC files too, so it's quite flexible. The 176x220 pixel display is in 262,000 colours, a pretty standard but good quality unit.

But even though 512Mb is impressive, it's nothing compared to the standard 4Gb in an iPod Sony Ericsson W800i back mini. We believe that the W800 can be upgraded to a more impressive 2Gb though. Also, surely this sort of handset is crying out to be 3G compatible so that tracks can be easily downloaded over the air. Even with the "Walkman" logo, it's clear that the W800 is just a phone even if it's pretty capable - in fact it seems to be almost identical to the new K750, just with different software - and just like the K750 is has a web browser, email client and PC synchronisation capabilities.

Still, this is an interesting and capable collection of features which may (or may not) have a significant market niche. It certainly looks cool though.

The W800 will be available as the W800i in Europe and Worldwide, plus the W800c in China. Both variants are tri-band 900/1800/1900 MHz handsets with GPRS.
