Samsung Soul (SGH-U900)
Discontinued 11th February 2008
Samsung's flagship device for 2008,
the Samsung Soul is a dual-screen slider with
HSDPA high-speed data and a 5 megapixel digital camera.
The Soul is meant to be the last "Ultra"
series device, and Samsung say that SOUL stands for
"Spirit of ULtra".. a pretty silly name, but
that's marketing for you. Despite the name, the Samsung
Soul is an interesting device.
As we said, this is a dual-screen phone. The
main navigation panel is actually a touch sensitive
display, where the keys change depending on what the
handset is doing. This "Magic Touch" panel
is a real active display (we think it is based on OLED
technology), rather than the standard hidden keys we
have seen elsewhere.
On the back is a five megapixel camera,
which we understand has autofocus and flash. Samsung
say that the Soul's camera also has image stabilisation
and face detection.. remember that Samsung also make
standalone digital cameras, so they have some expertise
here.
This
is a HSDPA 3.5G phone with download speeds of up to
7.2 Mbps. It has Bluetooth, but no WiFi. Memory is expandable
using microSD cards, and the main display is a 2.2"
240 x 320 pixel panel. The Samsung Soul is a pretty
slim device at 12.9mm depth. There's an MP3 player and
FM radio too.
One interesting feature is the Soul's
customisable themes, including one that carries on the
handset's brushed metallic look into the interface itself.
Also, the Soul features Bang & Olufsen enhanced
audio for multimedia playback.
As ever, Samsung haven't told us all
the details of the Soul. Little things such as battery
life, GSM / UMTS frequencies and even weight have been
omitted. We do know that the Soul should be available
from April 2008 in certain markets, although no pricing
has been given.
