Samsung
P200 (SGH-P200) - UMA Phone
Expected
Q3 2006 25th July 2006
The Samsung
P200 is a conventional
looking sliding phone on the surface, but underneath
it's actually a WiFi enabled handset capable of UMA
/ VOIP (Unlicensed Mobile Access / Voice Over IP) phone.
It's not the first UMA phone that we've
seen announced - the Nokia
6136 was the first - but the SGH-P200
is the first to market, launching first in Italy.
Essentially, UMA
is a second generation WiFi based VOIP
protocol which allows
the users to switch easily between a standard cellular
call and a WiFi based one. Clearly, you'll need a compatible
WiFi hotspot which you'll then have to configure, so
some assembly will be required with the P200.
UMA is the clever bit with the Samsung
P200, but beyond that
it's a very conventional slider phone. It looks exactly
like a whole lot of other Samsung sliders, and comes
with a 176x220 pixel display, 1.3 megapixel camera,
an MP3 player, 80Mb of non-expandable memory and Bluetooth
is a fairly lightweight device coming in at 95 grams.
Samsung
say that after the P200's
launch in Italy, it should then become available in
other European countries during the latter half of 2006.
