Samsung's newest entry-level Android smartphone, the Samsung
Galaxy Y looks like a smartphone remake of Samsung's popular
Corby line of feature phones.
"Entry level" is a relative term when it comes to Android
devices. The Galaxy Y has a 3.0" 240 x 320 pixel display, a
2 megapixel camera, GPS, WiFi and 3.5G support. Inside is an 832
MHz processor which should cope with all but the most demanding
applications.
The beauty of an Android handset over a feature phone is expandability..
there is an application to do just about everything, and the latest
version of Android (2.3) comes with a very capable web browser,
email client and media player, plus there's a wealth of support
for social networking and other applications.
Probably the most limiting feature here is the display - it's
quite small for an Android phone and not very high resolution, but
it is still an enormous improvement over feature phones like the
Corby range. Video capture is pretty poor too, at just 320 x 240
pixels at 15 frames per second, which isn't really good enough for
sharing.
The Samsung Galaxy Y should be available during November for
a retail price of approximately €150.
