The Samsung E770 looks very familiar
at first glance - it looks like just another variant
of the wide range of compact clamshells that includes
the E720, E530,
E620
and E730
plus many others.
What sets the Samsung SGH-E770 (slightly)
apart from other handsets in the range, is that the
E770 comes with TransFlash / microSD expandable memory
and stereo Bluetooth support.
The rest of the specifications are pretty
familiar - there's a 1.3 megapixel camera (with flash),
176x220 pixel TFT main display in 262,000 colours, a
web browser and email client, plus of course Java support.
It's an impressively compact phone, weighing just 85
grams and measuring 90x46x20mm. Talktime is quoted as
being a useful 5.5 hours, with 8 days standby.
The
SGH-E770 looks like a pretty decent multimedia phone.
It can play back MP3 and AAC files, and it overcomes
the memory limitations of other Samsung clamshells by
including the memory slot.. although the E770 comes
with a pretty good 80Mb of internal memory to begin
with. Stereo Bluetooth means that you can use a wireless
stereo headset too, and the external multimedia controls
are always a useful thing to find on a clamshell.
Perhaps the SGH-E770 is a bit predictable
- there's nothing really revolutionary going on here.
Instead, this is more of an evolutionary design,
building on the strengths of the Samsung E720 (a phone
we like a lot) and turning it into a fully fledged music
player, while still keeping the weight down.
There are some shortcomings - the camera
is only 1.3 megapixels, not 2 megapixels, and the SGH-E770's
176x220 pixel display is not as good as the 240x320
pixel panels that we're seeing in many rival handsets..
although it should be noted that most rival handsets
are a fair bit heavier than the Samsung E770.
Overall though, the Samsung SGH-E770
looks to be a great little phone. Comparing this handset
with recently announced rivals such as Nokia with their
disappointing 6125
and Motorola's stylish but impractical RAZR
V3i shows that Samsung really understand what they
are doing in this market and are still way ahead of
the competition.
