Samsung D720 (SGH-D720)
Cancelled 15th February 2005
We weren't expecting Samsung to come
up with a Symbian smartphone, but here it is - the Samsung
D720 runs the Symbian Series 60 operating system and
comes with a 176x208 pixel 262,000 colour TFT display
and one megapixel camera. Presumably, the D720 is a
sliding phone like the D710 although it's hard to tell
from the only photograph we have to hand.
It's a competent but fairly traditional smartphone
specification. The 176x208 pixel display is the same
at the Sony Ericsson P910 and most Nokia smartphones,
memory is expandable through MMC cards, the SGH-D720
also comes with stereo speakers for MP3 and audio playback
and Bluetooth.
As you might expect, the Samsung D720 also comes
with an email client and web browser, video streaming,
MMS and video messaging and Java. It can be connected
to a PC or accessory using Bluetooth or a USB cable.
At 110 grams and 99x47x22 mm, the SGH-D720 is much
lighter than most of its rivals, although how this translates
into battery life is uncertain. It's a tri-band GSM
900/1800/1900 handset with GPRS but there's no 3G or
EDGE support.
We think the D720 looks a bit slablike, but from
the specifications it seems to be a decent smartphone.
The release date has yet to be confirmed.
Updated: it appears that the D720 will be
available in 3G and EDGE configurations according to
the market it's being sold in. If this is the case,
it makes the D720 even more impressive.
