Sagem my850v

Shiny phones are all the rage, and the
Sagem my850v is the latest glossy handset to hit the
market.
At first glance, the my850v looks a
little like the popular Sony Ericsson Z610, but in fact
the my850v has a much better specification all around
and it could well be a real winner for Sagem. This particular
handset will be exclusively available on the Vodafone
network - in fact we originally spotted the my850v a
few weeks back masquerading under a different
name.
The Sagem my850v is a 3G clamshell with
a 2 megapixel camera, secondary video calling camera,
a 2" 240x320 pixel display in 262,000 colours,
microSD expandable memory and stereo Bluetooth. It's
fairly lightweight for a 3G phone, coming in at 95 grams.
It's pretty slim too at just 16mm thick.
The outside of the my850v is far more
interesting to look at than the inside - the mirrored
surface conceals a 96x64 pixel display than can display
caller information or audio track details. There
is also a set of concealed multimedia control keys
which light up when the my850v is playing music. This
can be seen more clearly in the picture below.
As
you would expect, the Sagem my850v has a multimedia
player that supports MP3 format music, and it can also
play back AAC, AAC+ and eAAC+ audio files. The my850v
also supports MPEG4, H.263, H.264 and 3GP video formats.
This handset is aimed at the lower midrange
market, so there are a few compromises to keep the cost
down. The 2 megapixel camera lacks autofocus or a flash,
and the internal memory is just 16MB so a microSD card
is an essential add-on. We're not sure if one is included
in the sales package of the Sagem my850v, but these
days this type of memory card is very inexpensive.
Underneath all the glossiness, this
is a tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz device with UMTS
2100 MHz 3G support. It also supports GPRS and EDGE
data. Overall, the Sagem my850v measures 96 x 49 x 16mm,
weighs 95 grams and has around 2.5 hours talktime on
3G, with up to 6 hours of music playback and a maximum
of 12 days standby time.
Unusually for Sagem, this is a low-cost contract
phone rather than pay-as-you-go (although we suspect
a release for prepay customers will follow), and the
my850v should be available directly from Vodafone in
the UK and possibly other regions from July 2007.
