Nokia E65

 Nokia E65 Available now
21st February 2007

One of Nokia's announcements at last week's 3GSM event, the Nokia E65 is a business-orientated slider phone.

The Nokia E65 is a 3G device running the Symbian S60 operating system, but overall the E65's physical layout is very similar to the Nokia 6280 and 6288 devices. In fact, in terms of basic phone functionality, the E65 really doesn't offer very much over these other two 3G sliders - all of these handsets are roughly the same size, have similar screens, have a multimedia player, a web browser and an email client.

One key difference though is software - the Nokia E65 is a Symbian smartphone, where the 6280 and 6288 run the more basic Series 40 operating system. For many users, the lower cost of the 6288 and 6280 will be more significant than the more sophisticated software on the E65.. after all, most people use only a small proportion of a modern handset's features.

In effect, this makes the E65 an extension of a corporate telephone system. The E65's internal WiFi capabilities mean that it can be used for VOIP (Voice Over IP) telephony too.

Although the closely related 6280 and 6288 sliders are popular with consumers, the slider format is very rare in business. Despite its relative novelty, sliders offer a larger screen and keypad than similarly sized monoblock / candybar phones, which tends to make them easier to use.

Overall, the Nokia E65 measures 109 x 19 x 16mm and weighs 115 grams. Talktime is up to 6 hours on GSM, 2.5 hours on 3G and 3 hours on VOIP. The screen is a 240x320 pixel panel in 16 million colours, and the Nokia E65 has a 2 megapixel primary camera with a secondary camera for video calling. Memory is expandable with microSD cards, and the E65 also supports Bluetooth.

The Nokia E65 is available now in selected regions for around €400 before tax and subsidy.
