The Nokia 2652 is a cosmetic enhancement
of the Nokia
2650 clamshell - a simple, low cost device that
Nokia aim to have on the market for just €100 (£60 /
$115 approximately) unsubsidised price.
As far as we can tell, there are no
new features with the Nokia 2652, except that it
comes in different colours and with a slightly different
external mouldings - a patterned effect called "Cell"
and floral effect called "Fleur". As far as
we can tell, the "linen" coloured phone on
the right goes with the "Fleur" theme, and
"Cell" is a black interior with either a very
dark grey or mid grey exterior. You can reasonably assume
that "Fleur" is for the girls, and "Cell"
for the boys.
When
the Nokia 2650 came out, we thought it looked a bit
like a cross between a sunlounger and a sanitary towel,
and although the Nokia 2652 retains the oddball looks,
the design detailing certainly makes it look better.
The Nokia 2650 was always a very interesting handset
to hold in your hand though because of the interesting
mix of materials and textures, and this handset is no
different. It certainly looks more distinctive that
a standard silver clamshell.
As we said, it's a simple device. There's
a 128x128 pixel display in 65,000 colours, GPRS, MMS,
flashing LED effects, a WAP 1.2 browser, Java, downloadable
polyphonic ringtones and some PIM functionality, along
with a set of other which mean that the Nokia 2652 covers
most of the basics. There's no Bluetooth, camera or
MP3 player, and it's only a dual-band 900/1800 GSM
device.. but remember, this is a 100 Euro phone.
Nokia say that they are aiming this
at "emerging markets", and they specifically mention
Africa, China and the Middle East in addition to Europe.
European customers can expect to see this available
on prepay where it promises to offer very good value
for money. Shipping is expected to being in October
this year.
