Motorola V551 / V555
Discontinued 27th July 2004
The Motorola V551 and V555 are respectively
American and European/Asian variants of the same phone.
Pictured here is the V551, but as far as we can tell
there will be very little difference between the models.
The
V551 looks instantly familiar to many people, following
the design of the hugely successful V500 and V525 and
the new V400p. The elegantly curved design has had a
little makeover though, with the dimples replaced with
an attractive two-tone shell, but other than that it's
a distinctive Motorola design. Inside is the 176x220
pixel 65,000 colour display which is better than almost
every other similar handset on the market. Underneath
is a quad band phone with GPRS and EDGE for high-speed
data. The V551/V555 supports Bluetooth too.
On the back is a fairly standard VGA-resolution camera,
and also MMS, POP3/IMAP4 email, Java, PC synchronisation,
hands-free speakerphone, polyphonic ringtones and the
usual set of features you'd expect. The V551/V555 is
probably closer in technical terms to the V600 than
the V500 range, but it's famliar enough feature set
for Motorola users and shows that this is a practical
and attractive everyday phone with mass-market appeal.
Motorola say that this phone will be
available in the third quarter of 2004. No prices as
yet, but we estimate that the V551/V555 will have an
unsubsidised launch price of about €500/£300/$550.
