The Motorola E1070 is a 3G clamshell
phone, on the surface similar to the Motorola
V1050, although with an internal antenna and
a higher resolution camera at 1.3 megapixels.
The unit pictured is branded to Italy's
TIM network (Telecom Italia), however the documentation
we have seen is in English, which possibly means that
this isn't an exclusive TIM-only device.
We don't know all of the features in
detail, but the Motorola E1070 is a 3G phone with video
calling, expandable memory, Bluetooth and an MP3 and
multimedia player, web browser and email client.
The screen size isn't clear. Although
the V1050 and most other Motorola handsets have a 176x220
pixel resolution display, we feel that it's more likely
that the E1070 comes with the same 240x320 pixel panel
as the Motorola
E1060 "bar" format phone. Presumably
the E1070's memory is TransFlash too, in common with
other Motorola devices.
It looks like a pretty reasonable handset,
but the fact is that 3G phones like this are very common
these days, and from what we know of the Motorola E1070,
it doesn't distinguish itself in any way. What's worse
for Motorola is that they haven't managed to get and
3G phones to market, and the upcoming E1060, E1120
and A1010
are not exceptional handsets when compared with the
competition. Apart from the hugely successful RAZR,
2005 has been pretty poor for Motorola. Unfortunately,
the E1070 isn't going to help Motorola's underlying
problems of a lack of up-to-date and reliable handsets.
