There tends not to be much activity when it comes to new releases in the winter. Manufacturers have already lined up their Christmas handsets during the autumn and for most the biggest month of the year is February with Mobile World Congress. We did see a few interesting devices though.

Sony

The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is a shrunk down version of the Z1 that manages to maintain almost all the features of its bigger counterpart. Another compact phone is the rather underpowered Sony Xperia E1, but the Sony Xperia T2 Ultra phablet device is more interesting, if you are in one of the target markets that is.

Samsung

Samsung went bigger and higher-resolution with the impressive Samsung Galaxy TabPRO and NotePRO range, including two impressive but very large 12.2" devices.

Other manufacturers

A new Nexus is always big news, and the Google Nexus 5 is another impressively specified device developed in collaboration with LG. And in what may well be the last Motorola handset before the business transfers from Google to Lenovo the Motorola Moto G offers a lot of features for not much money.

We looked back at some of the greatest handset disasters of all time, and looked back at the handsets making the headlines in November 2003 and 2008, December 2003 and 2008 and January 2004 and 2009.
