Another midrange "Desire" handset from HTC, the HTC Desire 601 features a largish 4.5" qHD display, a 1.4GHz dual-core processor, enhanced audio playback and a 5 megapixel primary camera. As the name suggests, the specification is pretty similar to the existing Desire 600 dual sim, except this is a single-SIM model.

The front-facing speakers are similar to those successfully used on the HTC One, although the overall design is a much more traditional HTC affair than the distinctive One. The display is a 540 x 960 panel which is a bit sharper than the WVGA screens that are common in this type of device.

The rear camera has a five-level flash, 1080p video recording capabilities plus there is a VGA resolution camera on the front for video calling and self-portraits. The camera is enhanced with various software tweaks including smile detection and object removal, plus the Desire 601 supports the little HTC Zoe videograms and comes with some interesting video editing features. The Android OS has the usual HTC add-ons including HTC Sense and HTC BlinkFeed.

HTC Desire 601 Inside, the 1.4GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor is coupled with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of flash memory plus a microSD slot. Usefully, the Desire 601 has LTE and HSPA+ connectivity as well as the usual options, and because this is an Android smartphone then is comes with all the usual smartphone features such as WiFi and GPS and GLONASS positioning systems as well. Inside there is a 2100 mAh battery and the whole thing weighs 130 grams.

HTC say that the Desire 601 should be available from September 2013 onwards, but they haven't said how much it will cost. Our estimate is that the Desire 601 should retail for less than €300 when it hits the shops later this month.
