..sorry - the UK Government to Shut Down GSM Networks is an April Fool's Day spoof, if you're not familiar with the concept, then read about here.

In fact, this is a serious issue and the so-called proposals mentioned in the article are not too far from the truth. The British government in particular seems to be very keen on cosying up to the gambling industry while at the same time eroding civil liberties. There are some interesting comments at Slashdot discussing the issues.
